Located
in the heart of the Bluegrass, our farmland boasts up to 20 feet of
prized Maury Silt loam topsoil. Our fields and paddocks are either
spring or well fed with naturally chemical free water. The top Kentucky
breeders of the "golden age" said that the best horses were raised on
the best soil with the highest quality water. We raise all our own
alfalfa hay and bed our stalls on the top quality bluegrass also
harvested at Millford. This offers an unequaled environment for the
finest care of thoroughbreds. Combined with Millford's expert horsemen
on dedicated watch, you're assured a smooth and professional boarding
experience.

HISTORY
Waterford Farm was in Kathryn West's family
since the 1880's. It was originated by her grandfather, the very
prominent Henry L. Martin Sr.
He and his father, Jesse Martin, were Confederate cavalry officers
during the Civil War. Both were captured and were lucky enough to be
repatriated in a prisoner exchange. Jesse Martin rejoined the fight and
walked home from Appomattox after the defeat of Gen. Robert E. Lee's
Army of Northern Virginia. After the war, Henry and Jesse Martin began
an extremely successful mule breeding business which afforded them the
opportunity to purchase the land that was to become the basis for the
750 acres of Waterford Farm.
In the 1980s, Dr. and Mrs. R. Smiser West's Waterford Farm became a
premier commercial breeding operation that catered to the industry's top
international clientele, including Mr. and Mrs. Bertram Firestone, H.H.
The Aga Khan, Egon Weinfeld, Corbin Robertson and Eclipse Award winning
breeder, Mrs. Henry D. Paxson. During that era, the farm's boarded
bloodstock included such greats as FANFRELUCHE, BOLD N DETERMINED,
GENUINE RISK, DARARA, MOON GLITTER, MOVIE GOER, OPTIMISTIC GAL, CANDYS
BEST, COUNTLESS TIMES, REIGNING COUNTESS, COUNTESS FAGER, MILLIGRAM,
MASARIKA, SHARAYA, TAKE WARNING, TABA and many, many others too numerous
to mention. Any student of the breed will remember fondly these great
champions and Grade I producers, each with a fascinating story behind
them.
Together, Dr. West and Mack Miller sold numerous multi-million dollar
yearlings when doing so was quite rare. One such yearling was the
special, record-priced DE LA ROSE. After gaining many years of valuable
experience at Waterford Farm, Dr. West's son, Bob, began his own
Millford Farm, a commercial operation bordering Waterford on three
sides.
Millford Farm has been extremely successful
in its own right at one point in the 1990's being a top ten Kentucky
breeding farm in percentage of stakes winners from horses sold. Such
graded stakes winners as Reneesgotzip, multiple graded stakes winner and
Breeders Cup placed, Testa Matta one of Tapit's leading money earners ,
and multiple graded stakes winners Miss Golden Circle and Latour, were
all bred and sold by Millford Farm. After a total renovation
of the farm in 2016, Millford is poised to reach even greater heights in
the near future.
